LineagePress was born out of necessity, and a little bit of curiosity. For decades, there wasn’t a simple, reliable way to share my genealogy research with family, friends, or the wider world through the content management system programs I used. After more than 30 years documenting my lineage, from painstakingly hand coded HTML pages to modern GEDCOM files, I wanted a practical, elegant way to bring my research to life in WordPress.
What started as a tool to organize my own genealogy quickly became something much more meaningful. Through my website, I’ve connected with cousins I never knew, discovering stories and memories that helped fill gaps in my family history. In fact, as I write this from the paradise of Cozumel, Mexico, I’m staying in the home of a family member I recently met through my genealogy website. He welcomed me into his home, shared his stories, and offered a connection that would have been impossible without this platform. Experiences like these, the chance to build bridges across time and distance, are exactly why LineagePress exists. It’s not just a tool for research; I view it as a way to bring families together and share the discoveries that make our histories come alive.
I’m retired and write programs like this for fun as well as to keep my brain in shape. LineagePress is driven by passion, not profit. A modest price for the Pro version, or the occasional donation, keeps me motivated and allows me to dedicate the time needed to continually develop and support the project.
While existing genealogy software is excellent, it often doesn’t integrate smoothly with WordPress. Many plugins are broken, abandoned, or overly complex.
